In January of 2015, a loan went unpaid by the Middlesex County Improvement Authority. The company did not pay back one million dollars in principal as well as interest on a loan that it took out for 20 million dollars. This loan was received from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority. The loan was used back in 2005 for the creation of The Heldrich. The Heldrich is a hotel located in New Brunswick as well as a conference center which is called the New Brunswick Development Corp.
Christ Paladino is the head of both operations. Paladino was the person who arranged the 20 million dollar loan for the projects. He told press that the loans would definitely be paid off, but the company just needed a few more years. Heldrich also opened the 235 – room which has not been able to attract the amount of guests that he was hoping for. The occupancy rate was only at a 63.5 percent in the year 2014. Because there was so much trouble with the loans, Gov. Chris Christie signed a law that prohibited state agencies to give loans, grants, and other forms of payment to businesses that have had defaults on state – issued loans and bonds.
